Dark chocolate 'wards off heart disease'
A spoonful or two of chocolate is finally confirmed by science to have substantial health benefits, giving people an excuse to eat the formerly naughty substance.
Researchers at John Hopkins University found that dark chocolate actually has properties that wards off heart disease after some subjects refused to give up the substance during another study.
Dark chocolate has been known for years to aid in lowering blood pressure, but now it is found that it lowers blood clumping incidence and slowing the rate platelets clot in narrow blood vessels.
Professor Diane Becker, who led the research team, said: "Eating a little bit of chocolate or having a drink of hot cocoa as part of a regular diet is probably good for personal health, so long as people don't eat too much of it, and too much of the kind with lots of butter and sugar."
They didn't come by the results intentionally, instead using the 'reject' study group that was made up of the 139 people who refused to give up forbidden foods like chocolate for a study on Aspirin responsiveness to blood clots.
"What these chocolate 'offenders' taught us is that the chemical in cocoa beans has a biochemical effect similar to aspirin in reducing platelet clumping, which can be fatal if a clot forms and blocks a blood vessel, causing a heart attack," Dr Becker explained.
Science had never published a biochemical analysis to explain the health benefits of eating dark chocolate before, making this a very important breakthrough for all the chocoholics of the world.
